What is mindfulness?

Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) describes mindfulness in the following way : Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness/attention to this moment, on purpose, without judgement, as if your life depended on it.

Awareness is something we all utilize in our daily life. So this is an ability that we allready have and can foster, and as Kabat-Zinn would say, a muscle we can develop through practice. The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program is one of the most well established and researched ways to practice this skillful awareness/ attention.

Modern life pulls on our attention constantly and there is growing evidence of the stress this can create in the process. We continue to grow our understanding of the role stress plays in our lives, our health, and our relationships. Mindfulness practice has been shown to help as we are able to become more aware of the ways and the moments when this stress is occurring, and then utilize the skills we learn to our benefit at those moments, and to the benefit of those around us.
